Alfredo Arribas is one of those winemakers who had a previous life as an architect before taking the plunge and becoming a full time winemaker in Priorat and Monsant. Since then, Alfredo has become one of the rising stars of Catalonian wine making. Alfredo farms his grapes organically/biodynamically, using natural processes as much as possible; minimal yeast, minimal intervention, minimal sulfur and short macerations.
Alfredo makes both red and white wines using Grenache and Carignan. We currently have the Portal del Priorat Gotes Blanques on the shelves. It's a cracking wine, made from 100% Grenache, the grapes come from his
Priorat vineyards. The grapes are organically farmed and come from high vineyards with slate and limestone soils. Gotes means 'droplets' in Catalan and the name is meant to imply freshness. This wine definitely lives up to its name. The slate and limestone is evident with nice minerality coming through on the palate, There are citrusy, orange flavours bouncing around on this medium bodied wine. The wine also develops layers of complexity the longer is stays in your glass, which for me, isn't very long! A delicious wine to have in the garden or with a meaty fish dish.
The Portal del Priorat Gotes Blanques is available in the Wine Vault.
