English Wine Week has officially started (May 26th - June 3) and we are delighted to be a part of it. English Wine has grown in leaps and bounds and is now a thriving industry in the South of England.
There are 164 wineries in the UK and 502 commercial vineyards. Most of those are concentrated in Kent and Sussex with the majority being in the South East of England (over 75%) with a smaller number located in the South West. Pinot Noir is the most widely planted variety with Chardonnay a close second and Pinot Meunier coming in third. It's no coincidence that these three varieties lead the way as the English countryside has proven to be very suitable to sparkling wine production. 68% of production is sparkling wine (40 million bottles annually).
We here at the Grocery are proud to be doing our bit to promote English wine and promote the industry. And what better way to do that then with an English Wine Tasting? That's right, this Thursday, May 31st we will be holding an English Wine Tasting masterclass from 7 - 8:30pm. We have two representatives from English wineries (Off the Line Vineyards and Court Garden Sparkling Wine) on hand to elucidate on the world of both English still and sparkling wine. And, we'll even have what must be a first of it's kind, English orange wine on tasting.
The tasting is £12 and includes and glass of wine on arrival. For our Grocery Wine Club members, cost is just £10.
